Sembrando Vida Agroforestry Program Launched

AMLO launched Sembrando Vida ('Sowing Life'), a flagship agroforestry-based rural welfare program paying small farmers in marginalized areas approximately US$250/month to plant at least 2.5 hectares with timber and fruit trees combined with traditional milpa crops. Its stated goals were climate change mitigation, biodiversity restoration, and rural poverty reduction. By 2022 the program had reached over 442,000 beneficiaries across 20 states at a total cost of US$3.7 billion. Critics noted cases where enrollees cleared standing forest to qualify for replanting payments.
