NAIM Texcoco Airport Cancellation Formalized
Construction on the New International Airport of Mexico City (NAIM) at Texcoco — a $13.3 billion Peña Nieto megaproject roughly 30% complete — was formally suspended on December 27, 2018. A four-day referendum organized by Morena in late October had returned a 69% vote to cancel, though only 1.07 million of 90 million eligible voters participated. Markets reacted sharply: the peso suffered its largest single-day drop since Trump's 2016 election. A 2021 audit found the cancellation cost 184.55 billion pesos.
