Operation Husky — Allied Invasion of Sicily

American and British forces landed on Sicily in the largest amphibious operation in history to that point (160,000 troops on the first day). Despite fierce resistance from German forces, Sicily fell within 38 days. The campaign directly triggered the fall of Mussolini's government and Italy's armistice negotiations.
