Italy Surrenders — Armistice with Allies

| World War II

Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, announced simultaneously with Allied landings at Salerno. Germany immediately disarmed Italian forces, occupied northern and central Italy, and deported thousands of Italian Jews to death camps. The Italian campaign would continue as a brutal slog up the peninsula until May 1945.
