Battle of the Atlantic Begins
Hours after Britain declared war, German U-boat U-30 sank the British passenger liner SS Athenia, killing 112 civilians. This opened the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous military campaign of WWII, lasting until Germany's defeat in 1945. German submarines would ultimately sink over 3,500 Allied merchant ships.
