Ukraine Strikes Tu-95MS Bomber at Engels Airbase and Yaroslavl Oil Refinery

| Ukraine

In an overnight operation into August 28, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) Alpha special forces unit struck a Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber-missile carrier at the Engels-2 airbase in Saratov Oblast — a major hub for Russia's Tu-95MS/Tu-160 fleet used to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukraine. In a coordinated strike the same night, Ukrainian long-range drones hit the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl (about 250 km northeast of Moscow, roughly 700 km from the Ukrainian border) — one of Russia's five largest refineries, processing around 15 million tons of oil annually — sparking multiple fires; it was the eighth Ukrainian strike on the facility in 2026. President Zelensky confirmed both strikes, as well as additional hits on Black Sea targets and the Kstovo refinery.
