Russia Launches 227-Drone Daytime Barrage on Ukraine — 200 Shot Down
On May 2, 2026, Russia launched an unusually large daytime drone barrage of 227 Shahed-type and jet-powered variant drones against Ukraine from morning until approximately 6:00 p.m. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 200 of the 227 drones (88% interception rate). The daytime attack tested Ukrainian air defense coverage during daylight hours, when visual targeting and man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) can supplement radar-guided systems. The drones were launched from multiple directions including Kursk, Shatalovo, and Oryol oblasts in Russia, as well as from occupied Crimea (Hvardiiske and Chauda launch sites). The mixed drone fleet included Shahed-136 types, jet-powered Gerbera/Italmas variants, and other UAV models. A separate overnight attack of 268 drones plus 1 Iskander-M ballistic missile was subsequently launched, beginning the night of May 2-3. Combined, May 2-3 saw Russia deploy approximately 495 strike drones plus one ballistic missile in a 24-hour period — one of the most intensive aerial campaigns of the war in 2026. Russia's MoD claimed its forces were targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure, defense industry facilities, and energy nodes.
