Ukraine Strikes Tuapse Refinery for 4th Time — Russia's Oil Capacity Hits 16-Year Low
Ukrainian drone forces struck the Rosneft Tuapse refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region on May 1, 2026 — the fourth strike on this facility in two weeks (previous attacks: April 16, 20, and 28). The strike reignited fires at the facility that Russian authorities had claimed were extinguished after the April 28 attack. Ukraine's sustained drone campaign has driven Russia's average refinery processing capacity to 4.69 million barrels per day — the lowest level since December 2009, a 16-year low. Since the start of 2026, Ukraine's long-range drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure have cost Russia at least $7 billion in losses. Ukraine extended its drone strike range to approximately 1,750 km in early 2026, enabling deeper and more precise strikes on Russian territory. The Tuapse refinery processes roughly 12 million metric tons of crude annually and is a key node in Russia's Black Sea energy export network. Environmental monitoring groups reported significant 'black rain' and oil contamination in the Tuapse area from the successive fires. Russia's oil sector has absorbed 140+ drone strikes in 2025-2026, with Ukrainian forces targeting refineries, pipelines, and offshore oil assets.
