UN Chief Guterres Calls for Accountability From Countries Fueling Sudan's War

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on September 16, 2026 that the situation in Sudan is 'absolutely horrible,' calling the humanitarian crisis 'devastating' and the suffering of the Sudanese people 'intolerable.' Guterres said the conflict 'is fueled by a number of countries from the outside' and that 'there should be accountability for the kind of interference in which some countries provide weapons to parties to a conflict when those weapons are used massively to attack civilians.' His remarks followed a UN fact-finding mission report earlier in September that found foreign weapons, military technology, fighters and logistical networks are sustaining Sudan's war and expanding both sides' ability to strike distant civilian areas with drones.
