Report Warns of Rising Famine Risk in Darfur and Kordofan as Rains Fail, Displacement Grows

A report published September 17, 2026 by conflict analyst and researcher Dr. Adeeb Yousif, titled 'Sudan: A Wake-Up Call for the World,' warned that Sudan faces a growing risk of severe food insecurity and famine-like conditions in parts of Darfur and Kordofan as poor rainfall, war, displacement and rising prices squeeze access to food. The report flagged sharpest deterioration in El Malha and Tawila (North Darfur), Jebel Marra, and Buram (South Darfur), citing declining agricultural production, livestock losses, disrupted markets and restricted humanitarian access. A mother in El Malha, describing her child's death from malnutrition, said 'I just wanted my child to live,' while a teacher in Tawila said 'dying of hunger is far more painful than dying by a weapon.' Yousif wrote: 'This is not a call to wait for famine; it is a call to act now to prevent it.'
