UN Security Council Unanimously Adopts One-Month Technical Rollover of Sudan Sanctions as US Pushes to Widen Embargo

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2828 (2026) on September 11, 2026, extending the Sudan/Darfur sanctions regime — an arms embargo, travel ban, and asset freeze first established in 2005 — by one month to October 9, 2026, rather than the usual full-year renewal, and extended the mandate of the assisting Panel of Experts to November 9. The UAE separately urged the Council to extend the embargo nationwide to 'stem the flow of weapons to the belligerents, protect civilians, and support efforts to end the conflict.' Russia's Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya rejected any expansion, saying 'we will not allow even a hint of broadening the restrictions by the Council against Sudan,' with China also resisting; Sudan's government argued a wider embargo would violate its Article 51 right to self-defense, while the UK called for pragmatism in the coming negotiations.
