Quintet Envoys Hold First Wartime Khartoum Talks With Burhan, PM Idris on Political Process

A Quintet delegation — the African Union's Mohamed Ibn Chambas, UN envoy Pekka Haavisto, EU Special Representative Annette Weber, IGAD Special Envoy Lawrence Korbandy, and Arab League Director Zaid Al-Sabban — held its first wartime round of talks in Khartoum on September 9, 2026 with Sovereignty Council chairman Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Kamil Idris, the Democratic Bloc Alliance, and the Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue Preparation Committee. Ibn Chambas said the delegation aimed to 'link the Quintet's efforts outside Sudan with Sudanese initiatives inside the country,' while the group's joint statement asserted 'there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan' and that 'a durable political process must be accompanied by concrete steps to protect civilians and end hostilities.' PM Idris called the dialogue 'the property of the Sudanese people' and pledged government cooperation, while the Quintet reaffirmed full respect for Sudan's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity and rejected parallel governing structures — a reference to the RSF-led rival administration.
