UN Human Rights Chief Issues 'Red Alert' Over El Obeid Siege

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk declared 'another human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan, this time in the capital of the strategic state of North Kordofan,' calling it 'a red alert that needs to land on the desks of heads of state and government around the world' at an urgent UN Human Rights Council debate on July 3, 2026. UN documentation found 15 drone strikes on El Obeid and surrounding areas over the preceding three weeks killed at least 45 civilians and injured 41, hitting markets, schools, fuel stations, water infrastructure, and vehicles. More than 600,000 residents and IDPs were described as trapped in the city, with escape routes blocked except eastward. IOM Chief of Mission Refaat Mohamed said 'families are being uprooted faster than humanitarian assistance can reach them.'
