Drone Destroys UNHCR Emergency Shelter Truck in North Darfur, Denying 1,314 Displaced Families Relief
A drone strike destroyed a clearly marked UNHCR humanitarian vehicle carrying emergency shelter kits in Umm Drisaya, North Darfur on April 24, 2026, while the truck was en route to Tawila — a displaced persons area sheltering more than 700,000 people in urgent need of emergency shelter. The vehicle was completely destroyed by the resulting fire; the driver escaped without injury. The attack eliminated emergency shelter kits destined for 1,314 displaced families. UNHCR condemned the attack as an assault on protected humanitarian infrastructure and warned that aid workers and convoys face acute dangers across Sudan's conflict zones. North Darfur State remains largely under RSF control following the fall of El Fasher in October 2025; Tawila is a contested area northwest of the former SAF stronghold. Attribution for the strike was not officially confirmed. The incident adds to a documented pattern of attacks on humanitarian workers and supplies — at least 22 aid workers have been killed in Sudan since April 2023, and humanitarian convoy attacks have occurred in both SAF-held and RSF-held territories.
