Inside Sudan's Only Functioning Tropical Diseases Hospital as Healthcare System Collapses
Al Jazeera published an in-depth field report from the Tropical Diseases Teaching Hospital in Omdurman — one of Sudan's few remaining operational specialized facilities — documenting the catastrophic collapse of the country's healthcare system entering the fourth year of civil war. With 37% of Sudan's health facilities now non-functional and 217 documented attacks on healthcare infrastructure, the hospital treats patients with tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue fever under severe resource constraints, sustaining losses exceeding $500,000. WHO data updated as of April 2026 records 2,052 people killed in attacks on healthcare facilities — an increase from the 2,050 figure recorded after the Al-Jabalain Hospital strike on April 3. Over 40% of Sudan's 52 million population requires urgent medical assistance, and the Omdurman hospital represents a critical node in an otherwise collapsed network. MSF and WHO both warned that continued targeting of medical infrastructure constitutes a war crime under international humanitarian law.
