New UN Envoy Haavisto Meets Burhan in Port Sudan; No Ceasefire Agreement

| Sudan Conflict

UN Secretary-General's newly appointed Personal Envoy for Sudan, Finnish diplomat Pekka Haavisto, met with SAF commander and Sovereignty Council Chairman Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Port Sudan on his first visit since replacing Ramtane Lamamra in late February 2026. Haavisto reaffirmed UN commitment to facilitating ceasefire negotiations and civilian protection. No concrete agreements were reached. Al-Burhan has previously stated Sudan will not accept a ceasefire 'so long as the rebel militia remains on any inch of the country.' The visit occurred against a backdrop of escalating drone warfare and the collapse of Blue Nile's Kurmuk to the RSF-SPLM-N alliance three days prior.
