Google Confirms Project Suncatcher AI Satellite Will Fly on SpaceX Transporter-18

Google confirmed its prototype Project Suncatcher satellite — carrying four Trillium Tensor Processing Units built in partnership with Earth-imaging company Planet — will launch on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base on October 1, 2026, targeting a dawn-dusk sun-synchronous orbit. The refrigerator-sized 'MVP' satellite is a research test of whether low Earth orbit — where satellites can generate up to eight times more solar power than ground systems — could eventually support scalable machine-learning infrastructure. Testing will assess the TPUs' survival of 50-100g launch loads, radiation resistance (the chips already passed a UC Davis proton-beam test exceeding five years' expected ionizing dose), and in-vacuum thermal management. Google says a two-satellite laser-link communication test is planned for 2027, with a longer-term vision of orbital clusters of TPU chips linked by high-bandwidth lasers.
