Day 767: Gunmen Shoot Search-Collective Founder Alma Rosa Rojo Medina and Daughter in Culiacán

Armed men intercepted a white Toyota Yaris in Culiacán's Estela Ortiz de Toledo neighborhood, on the city's southwest side, around 1:30 PM on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and opened fire on the vehicle's occupants. Inside were Alma Rosa Rojo Medina — founder of the search collective "Voces Unidas por la Vida" — one of her daughters, and three granddaughters. Rojo Medina was struck by a bullet in the arm and her daughter was also wounded; both were hospitalized in stable condition under the "Código Plata" hospital security protocol activated for violence-related cases, while the three granddaughters were unharmed. The Sinaloa State Attorney General's Office opened an investigation for attempted femicide. Rojo Medina began searching for the disappeared in 2009 after her brother Miguel Ángel Rojo Medina vanished, and has led "Voces Unidas por la Vida" since joining the search-collective movement in May 2014; this is the second attack against her. Fellow collective "Sabuesos Guerreras" demanded a full investigation and immediate protective measures for Rojo Medina, her family, and other search-collective members in Sinaloa, noting that a member of another collective, Rubí Patricia Gómez-Tagle, was murdered in Mazatlán in February 2026, and that in June a son of a "Voces Unidas por la Vida" member, Rodrigo Ernesto, was killed in Culiacán. No arrests were announced.
