Day 766: Gunmen Shoot Up and Torch Apartment Building in Culiacán's Montebello Sector, Rescue Woman and Two Children

Armed men arrived in at least two vehicles before dawn on Friday, August 28, 2026, and opened fire on a four-story apartment building on Calle Montebello between Monte Cáucaso and 22 de Diciembre, in the Montebello sector of Culiacán, near the Rafael Huelna elementary school. One vehicle was rammed into the building's gate to breach it before the attackers set an apartment ablaze; investigators later recovered more than 100 spent shell casings from long guns at the scene. Firefighters used a telescopic ladder to reach the rooftop and rescue a woman and two minors trapped by the fire; Civil Protection paramedics treated them for nervous shock, and no one suffered gunshot or burn injuries. Mexican Army personnel secured the perimeter while state prosecutors' forensic teams processed the scene. No arrests were announced.
