Day 751: Navy Surges 1,700+ Personnel Into Mazatlán as Chapitos–Mayos Violence Spikes

| Sinaloa Split

Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) confirmed the deployment of more than 1,700 naval personnel, 65 patrol vehicles, 25 drones and watercraft into Mazatlán and southern Sinaloa under 'Operación Sable,' launched August 8, after a sharp escalation in Chapitos–Mayos violence over control of the port city. In the first week of August, Mazatlán recorded 32 violent incidents, 14 homicides and 8 injuries — including three state police officers attacked with explosive-laden drones on the Mazatlán–Culiacán bypass near El Chilillo — a dramatic jump for a city that averaged just five homicides a month through June. Statewide, Sinaloa accounted for 35% of Mexico's intentional homicides on August 13 alone (7 of 20 nationwide), and 49 murders were documented in the state's first 13 days of August. Semar said the operation aims to 'contribute to families and visitors developing their activities in a safe environment,' citing Mazatlán's roughly 4.3 million annual tourists.
