Sheinbaum Rules Out Filing Complaints Against Peña Nieto and Other Former Presidents
During her June 24, 2026 morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration will not file criminal complaints against former presidents Enrique Peña Nieto, Felipe Calderón, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, or Ernesto Zedillo. 'We are not going to dedicate ourselves to filing complaints unless an investigation results in there being a link — that would be up to the Fiscalía, but on our part we are not going to dedicate time to that,' Sheinbaum said. Asked whether investigations exist against the former presidents, she deferred to Attorney General Ernestina Godoy. The statement comes as the FGR separately pursues an open investigation file into a $25M Pegasus-related bribery allegation against Peña Nieto (opened July 2025) — Sheinbaum's remarks signal her office will not proactively expand accountability efforts against former heads of state absent new evidence.
