Venezuela Government-Opposition Talks Conclude First Round With Judicial Reform, Frozen-Funds Agreement

August 12, 2026 — Venezuela's interim government and an opposition delegation led by Dinorah Figuera wrapped up a six-day, US-backed first round of post-Maduro transition talks in Caracas (government side led by National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez). The two sides agreed to 'initiate a process that contributes to the transformation of the justice system,' including reform of the Organic Law governing the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), and to pursue recovery of Venezuela's gold reserves frozen at the Bank of England to fund reconstruction after the June 24 earthquakes. The agreement did not address the National Electoral Council, which the opposition also wants overhauled. Nobel laureate María Corina Machado's bloc did not participate in the talks.
