UN Envoy Grundberg Warns Security Council Yemen at Gravest Risk of Full-Scale War Since 2022 Truce

August 13, 2026 — UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg briefed the UN Security Council that Yemen faces its greatest risk of renewed large-scale conflict since the April 2022 truce, citing deadly Houthi-government clashes in Ma'rib and Hadramawt (including the Aug 6-7 fighting that killed 30+ government soldiers) and renewed Houthi threats to Red Sea and Gulf of Aden shipping. Several Security Council members condemned the escalating Houthi attacks. Grundberg proposed three steps to reverse the escalation: restoring calm along frontlines, halting attacks and threats against shipping while upholding freedom of navigation, and ending cross-border attacks — warning that the calm cannot hold indefinitely absent progress on a Yemeni-owned political process.
