Deadliest Houthi-Government Escalation Since 2022 Truce Kills 30+ Soldiers; Grundberg Warns of Renewed Large-Scale War
August 6-7, 2026 — Houthi missile and drone strikes launched from al-Jawf killed more than 30 government soldiers in Hadramout and Marib, while a strike on Najran, Saudi Arabia, wounded 11 civilians including a child; 12 or more further missile attacks followed on August 7. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg said Yemen 'faces a greater risk of renewed large-scale conflict than at any point since the UN-brokered truce of April 2022' and called for maximum restraint and UN-led negotiations. The escalation traced back to a July 13 Yemeni government strike on Sanaa airport intended to block an Iranian flight, which triggered a spiraling Houthi-Saudi confrontation.
