Thailand and Cambodia Hold Border Committee Talks in Kuala Lumpur, Agree ASEAN Observer Mechanism

August 4-7, 2026 — Defense officials Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanit (Thailand) and Gen. Tea Seiha (Cambodia) met in Malaysia for an Extraordinary General Border Committee meeting to reinforce the fragile ceasefire dating to December 27, 2025. The two sides agreed to an ASEAN-led temporary observer mechanism, led by the Malaysian military attaché, to monitor compliance following repeated ceasefire-breach accusations from both sides earlier in 2026. Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim, acting as ASEAN chair facilitator, called it an important stabilization step.
