Min Aung Hlaing Arrives in Hanoi for Three-Day Vietnam State Visit, Fourth ASEAN Trip Since Becoming President

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing landed at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi at noon on September 4, 2026, beginning a three-day state visit at the invitation of Vietnamese President To Lam. The trip — his eighth foreign visit and third to an ASEAN member state since taking the civilian presidency in April 2026, following Laos (July) and Thailand (August 6-7) — included meetings with To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, plus a Myanmar-Vietnam business forum. Myanmar officials disclosed that bilateral trade has collapsed from $853 million in 2020 to $590 million in 2025 and just $335 million in the first half of 2026. The visit is part of Min Aung Hlaing's broader campaign to normalize Myanmar's standing within ASEAN; a further visit to Cambodia is planned for September 11-12.
