Junta Airstrike on Mawchi Tungsten Mining Town Kills 5, Wounds 7 in Karenni State
Around 4 p.m. on September 1, 2026, Myanmar Air Force jets bombed the Kyauk Kyar neighborhood of Mawchi — a centuries-old tin and tungsten mining town in Hpasawng Township, Karenni (Kayah) State controlled by a Karenni resistance alliance since 2024 — killing 5 civilians and wounding 7, some critically, and damaging homes. No fighting had been reported in the immediate area before the strike; regime forces have held neighboring Hpasawng town since February 15, 2026, and have surveilled the mining town with reconnaissance drones since April. A separate wave of junta bombing the same week hit other resistance-held areas of Mandalay and Karenni, killing a combined 7 more civilians.
