Kani Township Humanitarian Emergency: 30,900+ Civilians Displaced from 44 Villages as SAC Airstrike and Ground Campaign Intensifies
As of May 13, 2026, the ongoing SAC airstrike and ground column operations in Kani Township, Sagaing Region, have displaced over 30,900 civilians from 44 villages since the campaign began in late April 2026, according to Moemaka CDM Domestic News. The displacement figure represents one of the largest single-township forced displacement events in 2026 and reflects the scale of junta operations since launching its Yinmabin-Pale-Kani multi-township ground invasion on May 1. The SAC has combined air attacks — hitting a hospital on May 7 (killing 2 PDF) and several residential areas — with armored ground columns that have raided and burned villages throughout the township. With 30,900+ displaced unable to access proper food, clean water, or shelter during extreme hot-season temperatures (May temperatures in central Myanmar often exceed 40°C), UN humanitarian alerts classify this as a life-threatening emergency. The junta's Kani campaign is strategically linked to its broader effort to clear the lower Sagaing-Magway border corridor of resistance forces following the January-March 2026 PDF gains in the area. MoeMaKa's CDM network — documenting displacement township by township — also recorded 4 civilians killed and 7 injured in Kani Township operations to date.
