Homalin River Port Fire Kills 2, Injures 11 — 22 Boats Destroyed in Sagaing Region
On the evening of April 21, 2026, a massive fire and series of explosions erupted at the river port in Homalin Township, Sagaing region, northwestern Myanmar — killing at least two people (one man, one woman) and injuring approximately 11 others, some critically. The blaze ignited when an oil tanker caught fire during a fuel transfer operation; flames rapidly spread to surrounding vessels, motorized boats, and vehicles docked at the port near a local monastery. Emergency fire services deployed multiple engines, but the fire burned through the night into Tuesday morning due to large quantities of fuel stored aboard docked vessels, which triggered a series of explosions. At least 22 motorized boats and two vehicles were destroyed. This is the second major port disaster at Homalin in 2026, following a March 2026 fire that killed at least six people. Homalin lies in the upper Sagaing region along the Chindwin River — a zone of near-daily SAC airstrikes, PDF ambushes, and sustained ground combat — making emergency response infrastructure severely strained. The back-to-back disasters compound an already acute humanitarian crisis in one of Myanmar's most conflict-devastated regions. The cause has not been officially confirmed as deliberate, but the frequency of infrastructure incidents in Sagaing during active military operations has raised questions about whether disruptions to normal safety protocols are contributing to civilian disasters.
