Junta Forces Burn ~200 Homes in North Lukan Village, Pakokku Township (Magway) on Thingyan Eve

| Myanmar

On April 13, Myanmar military forces burned approximately 200 homes to the ground in North Lukan village in Pakokku Township, Magway Region — located approximately 5 miles from Pakokku airfield. Residents had fled beforehand, aware of the military presence and prior incidents in surrounding townships. The scale of destruction — nearly the entire village — is consistent with the SAC's systematic village-burning campaign documented since 2021 across Sagaing and Magway regions. Pakokku Township, situated in the Irrawaddy heartland, has seen escalating resistance activity as PDF forces expand operations from Sagaing into Magway. The burning of North Lukan represents part of a deliberate counter-insurgency strategy of collective punishment targeting civilian populations in areas where resistance has support. Over 800 villages have been burned by SAC forces across Myanmar since the 2021 coup; Magway villages are increasingly targeted as the front line moves south.
