Min Aung Hlaing Elected Vice-President — Presidential Elevation Imminent
On April 1, 2026, Myanmar's junta-packed lower house elected Min Aung Hlaing as one of three vice-presidents with 247 of 260 votes. Min Aung Hlaing had formally retired as Commander-in-Chief on March 30 — installing his loyalist General Ye Win Oo as the new military head — to meet the constitutional requirement for civilian candidacy. Nan Ni Ni Aye (Karen State MP) was elected VP by the upper house; Nyo Saw (Prime Minister) was appointed VP by the military bloc. Under the 2008 constitution, the three VPs then vote among themselves to elect the president — a process analysts described as a formality given Min Aung Hlaing's dominance. The NUG, international community, and ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights condemned the proceedings as an illegitimate military power grab dressed in civilian clothing.
