Parliament Formally Nominates Min Aung Hlaing as Vice-Presidential Candidate
On March 31, Myanmar's junta-controlled lower house formally nominated Min Aung Hlaing as a vice-presidential candidate, alongside Kyaw Swe (National Unity Party) as a second lower-house nominee. The upper house simultaneously nominated Tuu Jar and Nan Ni Ni Aye. General Ye Win Oo was officially installed as the new military Commander-in-Chief, completing the command handover from Min Aung Hlaing. Under the 2008 constitution, Myanmar's three vice-presidents (two elected by parliament and one appointed by the military bloc) vote among themselves to select the president — a procedure that made Min Aung Hlaing's elevation virtually predetermined given near-total military domination of the legislature. The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) issued a condemnation calling the proceedings 'well-orchestrated manoeuvres' to consolidate military rule under civilian cover.
