Min Aung Hlaing Elected Vice-President (247/260 Votes) — Presidential Elevation Imminent
On April 1, Myanmar's lower house elected Min Aung Hlaing as one of three vice-presidents, with a vote count of 247 out of 260 ballots cast via clear-sided ballot boxes in a live-broadcast session. Nan Ni Ni Aye (a Karen State regional MP) was elected by the upper house as the second vice-president, and Nyo Saw (the current Prime Minister) was appointed by the military bloc as third vice-president. A parliament-wide presidential election — in which the three vice-presidents vote among themselves — was announced for the coming days. Approximately 90% of parliamentary members are military-aligned; the military holds a constitutional 25% of seats and the USDP won approximately 80% of elected seats in the disputed January 2026 elections. The NUG condemned the process as illegitimate theater, and the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights called on ASEAN and the UN to reject the junta's civilian facade and impose accountability measures for mass atrocities.
