AA Captures Maungdaw — Full Bangladesh Border Control
The Arakan Army captured Maungdaw Township in northern Rakhine State on December 8, 2024, gaining full control of Myanmar's 270-km border with Bangladesh. Maungdaw was historically the epicenter of the Rohingya crisis (2017 genocide). AA's capture raised concerns about Rohingya refugees' fate and AA's handling of the Muslim minority community. Bangladesh government expressed concern. The capture left the SAC holding only Sittwe (capital) and Kyaukpyu in Rakhine State.
