Morena, PAN, and PRI Unite to Call INE's 2027 Budget Request Excessive
President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly criticized the INE's proposed 36.1 billion peso 2027 budget on August 6, saying the roughly 15 billion peso increase over 2024 election costs was 'exagerado' ('exaggerated') and that any increase should track inflation instead. The rare cross-party alignment saw Morena's Chamber spokesman Arturo Ávila call the sum unjustified, PAN Senate coordinator Ricardo Anaya urge the INE to fully justify the request while cautioning against underfunding the institute, and PRI Senate coordinator Manuel Añorve reject the figure outright, accusing the INE of acting as 'an executive arm of the Morena government.' The Chamber of Deputies' Budget and Public Account Commission was set to review and adjust the figure before final approval, with the INE's own General Council slated to vote on its draft budget August 18.
