INE Proposes Record 36.1 Billion Peso Budget for 2027 Elections
The INE's Temporary Budget Commission approved requesting 36.119 billion pesos from the Chamber of Deputies for its 2027 operations — about 15 billion pesos more than the 2024 federal election cost — to fund renewal of the Chamber of Deputies, 17 governorships, and hundreds of local offices. The proposal breaks down into 14.04 billion pesos for base operations, 17.4 billion for electoral projects (13.45 billion for the 2027 federal election alone), 774 million to begin preparing the 2028 second-round judicial elections, and a 4.69 billion peso contingency fund for potential recall referenda or popular consultations; it also includes 7.74 billion in public financing for political parties. The INE cited a growing electorate — projected to reach roughly 102 million voters by 2027, up from 98.3 million in 2024 — requiring 176,741 polling stations and about 51,714 field supervisors. The General Council was expected to vote on the draft budget August 18.
