Mayor of San Miguel Yogovana, Oaxaca, Assassinated Amid Rising Political Violence
Eduardo Saavedra López, constitutional municipal mayor of San Miguel Yogovana in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, was shot and killed outside his home in the early hours of July 12 while conducting a community surveillance patrol with municipal police. After flagging two motorcycles parked outside a residence, armed men emerged and opened fire, killing him at the scene. Oaxaca state prosecutors detained a suspect on July 14. Saavedra's death brought the 2026 total to seven sitting or former municipal mayors killed nationwide and at least 28 politicians and political-family members killed in 33 violent incidents, with Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Morelos the hardest-hit states — underscoring the persistence of narco-political violence against local officials regardless of party, a pattern that has recurred across PRI, PAN, and Morena governments.
