Michoacán Electoral Tribunal Sanctions Senator Noroña for Gender Political Violence Against Uruapan Mayor
The Tribunal Electoral del Estado de Michoacán (TEEM) ruled unanimously on July 6 that Morena Senate president Gerardo Fernández Noroña committed political violence against women based on gender against Uruapan Mayor Grecia Itzel Quiroz García. The case stemmed from remarks Noroña made from the Senate floor and on social media after the November 2025 assassination of Quiroz's predecessor and husband, Carlos Manzo, calling Quiroz 'irresponsible' and 'fascist' and suggesting she harbored ambitions for the Michoacán governorship. The tribunal found the comments aimed to discredit her administration and undermine her political legitimacy because of her gender. Sanctions include a public apology, mandatory registration for six months in the National Registry of Persons Sanctioned for Gender-Based Political Violence, a training course paid at Noroña's own expense, and reparations to Quiroz; the ruling remains subject to appeal before federal electoral courts. PRI national president Alejandro Moreno publicly celebrated the sanction against his frequent rival.
