Judicial Reform Enacted — Judges to Be Elected
Mexico's Congress passed a constitutional reform requiring all judges — including the Supreme Court — to be elected by popular vote starting in 2025. The Supreme Court's 11 ministers, 107 circuit court judges, and nearly 1,500 federal judges would face elections. The U.S. ambassador Ken Salazar condemned the reform as a threat to democracy; judges went on strike; and the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional in parts, but Congress and Morena proceeded. It was the most significant change to Mexico's legal architecture since 1917.
