Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Elected President

Díaz Ordaz won with 88.8% under PRI's managed electoral system. Interior Minister under López Mateos, he was known as a hardliner and authoritarian. His presidency (1964–1970) combined economic growth with political repression. The 1968 Olympics in Mexico City were to be his showcase; instead, the Tlatelolco massacre became his legacy.
