Nationalization of Mexico's Electric Industry
President López Mateos purchased the shares of foreign electric companies (American and Foreign Power, Mexican Light and Power) for $70 million, nationalizing the electrical grid. The move was extremely popular and followed the logic of economic nationalism established by Cárdenas's 1938 oil nationalization. CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) took over operations as a state monopoly.
