election
Adolfo López Mateos Elected President
López Mateos won with 90.4% in what critics called a managed election. His presidency (1958–1964) represented the high water mark of 'stabilizing development' with 6% annual GDP growth, stable peso, and major social investments including ISSSTE and the nationalization of the electric industry. He declared himself 'of the extreme left within the Constitution' while suppressing independent unions.
