Ovidio Guzmán López Extradited to United States

Ovidio Guzmán López was extradited to the United States on September 15, 2023 — approximately 8 months after his January 2023 capture. Attorney General Merrick Garland called it 'the most recent step in the Justice Department's effort to attack every aspect of the cartel's operations.' On September 18, 2023, Ovidio was arraigned before U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman in the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago) on five counts within a nine-count superseding indictment: drug trafficking continuing criminal enterprise (CCE), money laundering, and firearm offenses covering 2008–2021. He pleaded not guilty and was held without bond.
