El Chapo Escapes Maximum Security Prison Through 1.5 km Tunnel

Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán escaped from Altiplano maximum security prison on July 11, 2015, through a 1.5 km tunnel equipped with ventilation, lighting, and a motorcycle on rails. The escape — his second prison break — was a catastrophic embarrassment for Peña Nieto. The tunnel had been dug under the nose of prison authorities, fueling allegations of systematic bribery at the highest level. El Chapo was recaptured in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, on January 8, 2016 and extradited to the US in 2017.
