September 19, 2017 Earthquake (7.1 M) — Strikes on Anniversary of 1985 Disaster
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck just 120 km south of Mexico City on September 19, 2017 — the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake, on the day of the annual earthquake drill. At least 370 people were killed; dozens of buildings collapsed including several schools. Toño the dog became a media hero searching rubble. The earthquake reinforced the lessons of 1985: citizen-organized rescue brigades (brigadas) mobilized faster than official services. President Peña Nieto's government response was judged more effective than in 1985 but still criticized for slow coordination.
