Ayotzinapa: 43 Normalista Students Disappear in Iguala, Guerrero

| Mexico

On the night of September 26–27, 2014, students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College were attacked by Iguala police — on orders of mayor José Luis Abarca — who handed 43 students to the Guerreros Unidos cartel. Three students were killed at the scene; 43 disappeared. The Peña Nieto government's 'historical truth' (mass incineration at Cocula) was scientifically refuted. Mass protests swept Mexico; #YaMeCansé and #FueElEstado trended globally. The case remains Mexico's most prominent human rights crisis.
