US Troops Evacuate Mexico City

| Mexico-US Wars

American occupation forces evacuated Mexico City on June 12, 1848, completing their withdrawal to Veracruz for repatriation. Scott had maintained a generally disciplined occupation, but the nearly 9-month presence of a foreign army in the capital left a lasting wound on Mexican national identity. The last US soldiers departed Veracruz by August 1848. Mexico was left to rebuild with a depleted treasury, shattered army, and diminished territory.
