US Senate Ratifies Treaty — With Amendments
The US Senate ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 38-14 on March 10, 1848, but stripped several provisions including Article 10, which guaranteed existing land grants under Spanish and Mexican law, and modified Article 9, which protected the citizenship rights of Mexicans remaining in the ceded territory. The Senate's modifications would later deprive many Mexican-heritage landowners of their properties despite the treaty's original promises.
