Gadsden Purchase — Final Territorial Adjustment
US Minister James Gadsden negotiated with Santa Anna's government to purchase an additional 29,670 square miles of northern Sonora and Chihuahua for $10 million, to secure a southern route for a transcontinental railroad. The purchase defined the final US-Mexico border as it exists today. Mexico, still in financial crisis from the war, accepted. The Senate ratified the Gadsden Purchase on June 29, 1854, completing the territorial settlement of the Mexican-American War era.
