Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Signed

| Mexico-US Wars

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed at the Basilica of Guadalupe north of Mexico City on February 2, 1848. Mexico ceded approximately 525,000 square miles — over half its pre-war territory — including present-day California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The US paid Mexico $15 million and assumed $3.25 million in claims by American citizens against Mexico. The Rio Grande became the permanent US-Texas border.
